Landing on Kinmen Island feels like stepping into an RPG game set in a real-world map, where you’re surrounded by the backdrop of historical dramas and familiar yet unfamiliar stories playing out one after another. The line between virtual and reality on the island is often hard to discern.

Kinmen’s history dates back over 1,600 years, with records from the Jin and Tang dynasties mentioning it as a horse-rearing area. During the Song and Yuan dynasties, salt fields were established, along with official bureaucratic institutions for management. Throughout the military administration period, Kinmen endured the Battle of Guningtou and the 823 Artillery Bombardment. It wasn’t until the opening of the mini three links that cross-strait relations gradually began to warm.

Recently, the completion of the Kinmen Bridge, a 12-year construction project, has transformed travel between Greater and Lesser Kinmen into a surreal scenic journey. Meanwhile, on the other side, Xiamen is busy with land reclamation on the Xiaodeng Islands and the construction of Xiang'an International Airport, which seems to hammer relentlessly at one’s consciousness.
